Easter Catch Up – LittleThingsByLuce, Big Wild Thought + Tom’s Trunks

Happy belated Easter! I have had a lovely break and I hope you all have too! Today I would like to do a quick catch up – a run down of some of what I have to share with you.

Firstly I want to say a big ‘Thank You’ to all the feedback I got from my first two podcast episodes!  As I said above – I have taken a break but the next episode will be up soon so keep an eye out.

Those who have listened to the second episode will know that I had Lucy Robertson on, who runs an affordable handmade jewellery business, made in Fife (Scotland) but sold online via her website. She promotes it via her gorgeous looking Instagram, Facebook and TikTok!

Lucy is in her first year at the University of Glasgow studying Sports Science and Physiology all whilst running a pretty full on business. She gets so busy juggling both that her amazing mum gives her a helping hand packing and posting orders. To make her packing more sustainable she reuses the envelopes she receives her beads in. Lucy also uses packing that is 100% recyclable and made from at least 60% recycled content.

Lucy makes all sorts from necklaces to rings and is always so active on her socials! She is always reposting her customers posts and promoting other small businesses. On Lucy’s TikTok account she has almost 28 thousand followers and one of her videos reached 4.5 million views which (as you can imagine) caught a lot of people’s attention worldwide!

Watching Lucy’s TikTok videos and seeing her posts and stories makes everything seem a little more personal. She is so in touch with her customers and I love the fact her notifications are on for when she gets an order. I 100% recommend you go and follow her on her socials (@littlethingsbyluce) and most definitely GO AND CHECK OUT HER WBSITE!! If you have any friends or family birthdays coming up or if you just want to treat yourself clic

I recently had my 15th birthday and very fortunately received some lovely presents, two of which I want to talk to you about.

Firstly I received and t-shirt from my aunt, uncle and cousins which is from a shop called The Big Wild Thought.

Big Wild Thought

The Big Wild Thought is a clothing brand that allows people to ‘wear and care’ at the same time. They aim to help conservation efforts around the world. Every time someone buys from them, they donate 10% of the retail cost to the relevant wildlife charities that they support. Their packaging is made from recycled cardboard and acid-free tissue paper – so it is all recyclable.

I will leave some links so if you are interested, you can go and have a good explore b

ut essentially Big Wild Thought currently support 17 animal charities across the globe. You can help animals as large as an African elephant and orca to animals as small as a red squirrel and European robin! In every order they include information about the animal and they include the chosen charity to help inform their customers about animal conservation plus lots of fun facts too!

I received a t-shirt which I’ll link below that is embroidered with an African elephant. I have already worn it multiple times in the past 2 weeks since my birthday and I cannot wait until the warmer weather kicks in!

The second product I would like to talk about are my brand new ‘Tom’s Trunks’ beach and lounge trousers. I am incredibly grateful for these as I have been wanting them for quite some time. Let me tell you a little bit about ‘Tom’s Trunks’.

Tom’s Trunks

Tom Holmes is the founder of this business who was inspired by the vibrant colours of Kenyan kikoy material and understood its potential for extremely comfortable beach and loungewear. His aim is to grow his business whilst promoting ethical production and the core values of sustainability.

The people of ‘Tom’s Trunks’ spend a lot of time helping others and giving back to the community and a % of every sale goes to the ‘Tom’s Trust’ which is a charity supporting children with brain tumours. The charity was set up by Andrew and Debs Whiteley whose son, Tom, tragically passed away at the age of 9.

Tom’s dream for his business is to spread a ‘vibe’ and gift as many trunks as he can to young people in hospital or going through hard times – he really believes they bring joy and colour into peoples lives.

So not only are ‘Tom’s Trunks’ plastic free, supporting the slow fashion movement, are sustainable and are charitable they genuinely put a massive smile on peoples faces which I think is one of the most important things someone can do.

I will link the trousers I have below but I will also put more useful links for you to go and explore.

So there you go! Two fabulous brands in a nutshell and one very happy girl! As I have already said I will link lots down below so please go and explore and follow their social medias to keep in the loop. Both brands really do add that extra bit of colour we all need.

Thank you very much to my two aunts – Jo and Linda xxx

My next blog post will be coming soon and to give you a quick idea – small businesses where you can find your everyday products!

I hope you have enjoyed this post and if so make sure to follow my Instagram and Facebook (@BeingMarthaB) and take a listen to my podcast on all podcast listening platforms (Being Martha B).

Love, Martha B x

I Am Launching A Podcast!

I am launching a podcast!!!

Some of you may have already listened to my trailer which was released on Monday (hope you enjoyed it by the way)! Today I just wanted to give you a sneak peak of some of the content I will be hoping to create on my podcast.

Of course my content on here will be linked somehow but there will be twists – interviews, discussions and getting more involved with you all!

Those of you who are regular readers of my blog will know that I am very keen on shopping local, supporting small businesses etc etc and I will be continuing with this theme for the podcast.

I have already contacted some businesses including The Potato House (check out my potato blogs) and Little Things By Luce who runs a jewellery business and both have come back to say they’d be interested – so keep an eye out for them!!

Here is a insight to Lucy’s businesses!

Little Things By Luce:

Lucy runs a handmade jewellery business based in Fife. She makes earrings, necklaces and rings! I have 3 pairs of earrings from her and 2 rings. I have Hollow Crescent Moon, Lightning Bolt Huggies and Light Blue Pearl Heart earrings – I wear all of them regularly. My most recent delivery was  a Blue Smiley Resin Ring which I love! Lucy is my favourite person to buy presents from for friends (or sisters in my case). My little sister got her ears pierced in the summer last year and for her birthday in June, I bought her a pair of earrings and a necklace which she loves! A few of my friends have received the same thing for their birthdays too.

Little Things By Luce started around this time last year at school, selling jewellery to pupils outside the common room and as they say ‘the rest is history!’

Headband, earrings, walks
Me wearing Lucy’s Hollow Crescent Moon Earrings!

Please go and check out her website and have a browse – there is so much gorgeous jewellery to choose from (and all handmade which you know I love).

Check out her Instagram here!

You will be able to hear me talk to Lucy on an upcoming podcast so follow my Instagram and Facebook (@BeingMarthaB) for regular updates!

Other Plans!

Plans for the podcast are not solely based on businesses! My first episode which will be released on Monday 8th March will be me chatting to my dad about food!

My dad and I (and the rest of the family) are massive foodies and I listen to the Off The Menu podcast so I thought I would chat to my dad about what he would have on his menu if he had a restaurant – and why he would chose those things.

Another big foodie I know is my godfather Ross Keenleyside who has written cookbooks upon cookbooks including CookHouse59 filled with over 120 classic comfort recipes! I would really like to have in on the podcast at some point, so Ross, if your reading… expect an email from dad!!

Ross’s Links:

Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/CookHouse59/about/

Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/cookhouse59/?hl=en

Website – https://www.rossk.co.uk/about

I also have some other things up my sleeve but keep reading my upcoming blogs to keep in the loop!

I make my podcast through the app Anchor and it distributes the podcast to Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Breaker No. 1 Podcast app, Google Podcasts/Play, RadioPublic, Castbox, Overcast, PocketCasts and TuneIn. The BeingMarthaB podcast is only available on Spotify, Google Podcasts/Play, Breaker, PocketCasts and RadioPublic so far as Anchor distribute it for me! But if you have any of those apps make sure to search: Being Martha B and press subscribe (and take a listen to my trailer if you haven’t already)!

Thank you to those who have given me such lovely feedback, I really appreciate it!

I hope this blog has given you a wee snippet of what will be coming up and given you an idea of the types of things I will be talking about!

See you on Monday 8th for episode 1!

All About Sustainability

(I’d love to dedicate a whole blog to sustainable fashion so if you are interested or have anything you would like me to include please DM me on my socials or leave a comment here!!)

‘Being Sustainable’ is not all about reducing the use of so much electricity, reducing the amount of meat you eat, reducing the amount of water you use in the shower etc etc. I think it is more about ‘increasing’ the way you do other things.

Eating Sustainably

For example to start us off – the ‘meat issue’. There are many people around who keep telling us to ‘eat less meat.’ Now I am no vegan or vegetarian. I do not think that simply cutting out or eating less meat is the answer here!

Many people want to reduce their carbon footprint and cutting down on meat and dairy products has proven to do this. But this is not the the option for some people and for others (like me) just not a choice I want to choose!

How about we all start being more conscious when shopping for our meat and diary products?

It is always good to remember that supermarkets are not the only place you can buy your meat. It is wisest not to buy the cheapest option in the supermarket – the products have most likely been mass produced and then shipped or driven from who knows where!

What you could do if you like your meat is take the time to find out about local butchers. We have plenty of butchers to choose from near us and we also have many local farmers who sell and trade their produce too!

My family tried to start being more environmentally friendly back at the beginning of 2018.

Every Tuesday and Friday we get pints of milk delivered in glass bottles by our milkman. I’d love to know how much plastic waste we have reduced by doing this.

It is also a good idea to try to buy free-range eggs which are not only better for you but better for the environment too! Maybe try look out for local farms or families selling eggs! You can often see people who own chickens selling eggs in driveways! A farm down the road from us sells eggs, carrots and potatoes too!

If you are a fish fan try find out if you have a fish man who comes into your neighbour-hood every week! In most cases the fish will be as fresh and local as possible.

Buying fresh produce is also a great way to eat more sustainably. As much as you may want to snack on strawberries in the winter, it is much better for you to eat them in the season. Your food will taste better and it won’t have been treated with loads of ripening agents. Your carbon footprint will be reduced as there is no reliance on internationally shipped produce. This means you will also be helping local businesses and UK farmers.

Whilst buying free-range eggs and ethically sourced produce can be more expensive, eating these products less often reduces your overall spending. My family has tried to have at least one vegetarian meal a week and we are always using left overs in meals too!!

Dressing Sustainably

Now eating well isn’t the only way to be sustainable. It is important to remember that fast fashion is the second largest consumer of the world’s water supply, produces 10% of total global carbon emissions and 85% of all textiles go to dumps each year.

So how can we dress sustainably?

Easy answer. Buy British or at least buy local!! This is daunting as there is the thought that you won’t be able to wear the brands you may be used. Plus you are limiting your choices in terms of trends. Sorry to have to break it to you but you most likely will have to spend a little more too. Trust me it is all worth it in the long run.

How can you begin? Well first of all do some research! Social media is brilliant for investigating businesses. There are also so many apps too for selling clothes, accessories, shoes and more. I have found lots of fashion flip stores online too.

During lockdown there was a period of time where lots of people were ‘up cycling’ the clothes they no longer wear into something they would wear. Some quick thinkers turned it into a business! So yes – take some time, look into these businesses, research is key! You may also appreciate the items more because you know you put effort into finding the store!

You have to change your attitude!!! In 3 months will you really want to be wearing the tiny, tight fitting, floral vest top you are about to click ‘buy’ on were the postage costs more than the item?

Emma Watson previously said: “Vintage clothing has a huge role to play in making fashion more sustainable and reducing a global footprint that includes the 132m metric tonnes of coal used yearly through the production of new fibres, dyeing and bleaching of garments and the 6-9 trillion litres of water used by the industry.”

Opt to donating your unwanted clothes to charity or good causes or even sell them to earn a little extra cash! Look after you clothes and maybe even learn how to repair clothing yourself instead of throwing out that favourite t-shirt with a tiny rip on the armpit. Go for quality over quantity (like the English teachers alway say).

There are so many different ways to shop sustainably and it may not sound it but it is important! Just take more time to think before you buy. If I am 14 and doing all of this then why can’t you all do it too?

I thought I’d write this to just show you some insight into one of my New Years resolutions. There are so many different ways to be sustainable but unfortunately for me at the age I am I can only act on a few.

I hope I have given you some new ideas or at least made you think a little bit before you next go shopping on your favourite fast fashion website. Or before you are next in the supermarket staring at the plastic wrapped processed meat in the ‘frozen foods’ aisle. 🙂

See you soon!!

Shopping Local This Christmas – How and Why

We all know what its like at this time of year. You sit at home frantically searching the internet only days before Christmas looking for anything you could get your dad for him to unwrap from under the tree. We have all been there.

But is frantically scrolling through Amazon, EBay, Etsy and any other big online site that pops up really the answer?

So what can we all do to help?

All year we have spoken about sticking together and helping one another so why not try to execute and prove that this Christmas.  (more…)

Zip Lining In Kincraig

Hello, welcome back. It the end of half term for me and even though I have had 7 months off school because of lockdown, it was lovely to get a break.

My family and I went up to Nethy Bridge, near Aviemore and Grantown-on-Spey, for the first week. We go there every year and because we know the area it was easy just to sit down and relax!

I am not going to tell you EVERYTHING I did that week but there was one particular activity that we had not done before that I thought I would share with you.

Zip Lining:

On the Monday of our trip we got up early and drove about 1 hour to Alvie Estate 4 miles from Aviemore, near Kincraig. We were going on a zip wiring trail through the pine forest through the estate and over the Alvie Gorge.

My dad wasn’t going to do the trail as his back wasn’t too good but it meant he could walk the dog. Mum and I were a bit worried as both of us struggle with heights but my sister was however, not fazed at all!

We met at the Estate Office and were given a harness, gloves and helmet. Then we walked about 5-10 mins up to the top of the zip trail. We were heading on the Zip Adventure trail which included 17 self-guided zip wires with a permanently connected safety system.

Before we started the Zip Adventure, an instructor explained and showed us how to move ourselves along the line. Once we tried it ourselves on a Zip Guide we understood we would be attached at all times until the end of the course. After our safety briefing, we set off!

The first few lines were just to get us started and to ease us into it but once we had got the hang of it, we were off by ourselves across the gorge and through the the forest.

Even though I was worried about the height, I had loads of fun and forgot about it. We flew over the gorge and the little waterfalls and it was incredibly enjoyable.

About half way through our zip guide met us to check up on how we were doing. Of course we were fine and she surprised us by asking, if at the end, we wanted to go round the trail again. Um yess!

Because of the whole Covid-19 thing, they also had to adapt, like everyone else. They reduced group sizes meaning we got round the course in about half the time people usually would. So as a bonus we were allowed around again.

It was great to have that opportunity as we felt in control and knew what to do and could enjoy it in the full.

Other Courses:

Overhead of the zip line was a different course called the Zip Trek which is 14 zip lines long but has much longer wires and was much higher.

The Trek course is more in the tree tops and after we finished the Zip Adventure course, my sister and I kept going on about how much we wanted to do the other course. We just wanted to stay in the trees!

We actually did consider booking the second trail, we enjoyed it that much, but sadly it was fully booked for the next two weeks.

The whole zip line course was so much fun and would 100% recommend if you are ever up near Alvie. I very much enjoyed going over the gorge and guiding myself through the course plus the instructors were lovely and easy going. Definitely will be going again!!! Even if it isn’t to experience the zip park again, as they offer so many other activities including white water rafting, gorge walking and archery.

Half Term Summed Up:

Our Nethy Bridge trip was so refreshing. To get away from everything was really lovely. We did lots of walking and cycling and just spending quality time outside. Even the dog looked healthier by the end!!

I hope you enjoyed this blog and I you have ever visited Zip Trek Park let me know your experience!

If you have anything specific you want to read about let me know on my Instagram or FaceBook!

First Potatoes

Welcome back to the potato series!

This one is exciting as I’m sure you have already guessed that I harvested my first potatoes!

I was on holiday on the Isle of Colonsay last week so my neighbours kept an eye on them for me.

A few days before our hols we went to dinner with friends which made me want to get on with pulling them up!

Our friend Helen has been growing potatoes from the Potato House too and decided to harvest 2 varieties which we had for dinner along with ribs and salad.

They were absolutely delicious and I decided that I would harvest some of my own when I came home from Colonsay.

I planted mine a bit later than Helen which is why I waited a week. Of course you can leave potatoes for a long time before harvesting as long as they are all out by the time the frost comes.

As you know I planted 5 varieties of potatoes 3 of which were in Bag’s For Life and the other two separated into pots.

One of the varieties I was/am growing are Shetland Black potatoes. These were separated out across 3 pots and I had been warned by a local farmer that these may not grow as many as the pots are quite little.

As I am not an expert potato grower this was a bit of an experiment. I looked online and it looked as if you should harvest potatoes when the leaves begin to yellow, die or when the flowers die back.

The pot I decided to do had nothing of the above but I risked it.

I took a pair of scissors from the kitchen and chopped off all the stalks. I then tipped the pot into a bucket and began to loosen the soil. I honestly was surprised to see a huge potato straight away.

It was a lovely healthy colour of purple.

I kept digging and found 23 more potatoes!!! All I kept saying was ‘Oh Wow’! I had no idea what to except but I did not expect that many in the pot.

I regret not leaving it for a wee while longer as there were some potatoes so tiny that I hardly counted them.

But it doesn’t matter! For my first pot I was very pleased. The two other pots of Shetland Black I am leaving for longer to see if the potatoes get any bigger or change in any way.

Dad hosed the potatoes down to wash the mud off and then washed them again in the sink. He cooked them for dinner and when we cut them in half we saw they had a purple ring in the middle of them which we thought was pretty cool.

For our dinner we had chicken breast flavoured with chicken. We also had buttered broccoli and of course to top it all off, the Shetland Black potatoes, lightly buttered.

They were so tasty and I felt very proud. The families first time eating home grown potatoes from our very own garden.

This has been short but I wanted to update you on how I am getting on and decided to dedicate a blog to the first potatoes that I harvested!

Very happy with my 24 potatoes which disappeared in a night and can’t wait to pull up the others.

It will be interesting to see the difference in the ones left for longer.

Please let me know, if you are growing potatoes, how you are getting on and/or what meals you have had so far!

Love Martha B x
